Team Dayton forms for Gay Games IV

Like hundreds of cities and communities around the world, Dayton, Ohio is actively recruiting athletes and both performing and visual artists to represent the Miami Valley; to join in the fun, and experience this world class event. Team Dayton is assembling a contingent right now. Individual athletes, teams and artists are encouraged to call for a list of the events and more information. Team Dayton, a non-profit organization, is raising money to assist all participants with expenses. Registration deadline is December 31. Gay Games IV will be held June 1825, 1994 in New York City.

This quadrennial event began in 1982 in San Francisco, the vision of former Olympian Dr. Tom Waddell, and have doubled in size every year they've been held. Gay Games III in Vancouver, British Columbia, featured over 7,000 athletes from all over the world, and packed in 40,000 spectators for the opening ceremonies.

Tennis superstar Martina Navratilova is a member of Gay Games IV Host Committee and is helping with fundraising.

The sporting events are open to anyone who wishes to participate. There are no qualifying rounds, and the teams are open to both gay and non-gay athletes. Participants will find a full range of competitive sports, from aerobics and figure skating, to powerlifting and track and field.

In addition to the sporting events, the Cultural Festival includes a major pop music concert, a night of women's music, a 1000 voice chorus of men and women, professional comedy, and an exhibit including paintings & sculptures by artists with AIDS.

The Dayton Lesbian & Gay Center, a cosponsor of the Dayton team, has booked 50 rooms at the St. Moritz for the Dayton participants. Serenity, Inc, also a co-sponsor, has T-shirts and other merchandise available at Jessie's Cafe, located on Ludlow Street in downtown Dayton.

Those interested in participating in Gay Games IV should contact the appropriate coordinator (all phone numbers are area code 513):
